Tasting notes & perfect serve
N: What a pleasant flavor combination this gin starts with. Immediately it became clear to us that we are talking about a complex gin. The nose mainly shows earthy tones, which are supplemented by a few floral hints. In the nose I notice mainly orris root and thyme. Lavender provides some freshness. We were immediately curious to know what the palette would tell us.
P: The palette brings out different herbs than the ones I experienced in the nose. The earthy character disappears somewhat into the background and juniper takes the lead. You can say that this gin brings a warm feeling and above all it is full of taste. I notice in the palette the heat of the different kinds of pepper that are used, as well as orange is noticeable. In the end, the taste gradually becomes a little softer. This is pure enjoyment.
F: The finish of this gin is medium long. There remains a nice warmth which makes you want to take another sip
S: This Distiller's Cut is perfect for drinking it pure or over some ice. Both Emma and I love to drink this gin our own way. Emma loves it with the Aqua Monaco tonic, an orange wheel and some lavender, while I prefer it with a Thomas Henry Indian Tonic, a dehydrated lemon wheel and a sprig of rosemary!
Background information
Friday evening, which means that it's time to relax after a hard week of work (or a week full of classes in our case).
On Friday evening we do not only taste different gins together with the two of us, but we also like to take an old favorite from our gin shelf.
Today we'll take you to a real piece of heaven, the Monkey 47 Distiller's Cut of 2017. Our true fans and gin drinkers know that this new Distiller's Cut was launched at the end of October last year. Back then we proudly presented you a review of this new and unique gin. This weekend, however, we will be doing it a bit more detailed with tasting notes and a new Gintasticbelgium perfect serve!
Monkey 47 is one of the gins every gin collector must have on his shelf, due to his 47 herbs, 47% ABV and his absolutely great taste. What's so special about the Distiller's Cut is that the Black Forest Distillers behind Monkey 47 put one herb in the spotlight every year (a different herb each year). For the 2017 edition this was "Achillea Moschata" or also known as musk yarrow. The flowers of this plant are white, yellow, red, orange or pink. In Belgium we find the white one. Furthermore, the Distiller's Cut is only produced in limited quantities, making it a true collector's item. And yes, one of the 4000 bottles is standing on our shelf (and offcourse we're so proud of that).
The gin was distilled three times without cooling filtration. This 2017 edition has had an extra long maturation on pottery jars, which makes the taste finer and more intense.
Those who want to get such a fantastic bottle can order one at www.urbandrinks.de, but be quick because the amount of available bottles is (very) limited.
Cheers,
Gintasticbelgium
