Today we are bringing you our first tonic special, more specific a full review of the J. Gasco tonics. An Italian range that drew our attention since the start of our blog. The story behind the tonics starts with Giuseppe Gasco, son of a renowned pharmaceutical Antonio Gasco. Since he was a child, Giuseppe helped his father prepare various brews in his shop. The family experienced difficult times during the First World War, which made Giuseppe's mother, Maria, decide to emigrate. In 1920 the Gasco family moved to Chicago, which would mean the start of a new life for them. They received shelter from the brother of Maria, who took Giuseppe under his wings and put him to work in his company.
Giuseppe got the nickname "Joseph" from his uncle and soon this changed into J. Gasco. Joseph had a lot of success in his early twenties. He was the one who knew that the different beers, whisky moonshines found on the black market at that time (since alcohol was made illegally at the time) needed some support, so that it would be loved by a larger audience. Based on the knowledge he gained from his father, he decided to make a series of tonics and soft drinks to take alcohol consumption to another level. The drink would be more likely to consume and it provides a nice visual aspect. He concluded that it would result in more consumptions .
On 5 December 1933, however, a lot would change. That day alcohol would become legal again, which meant that consumption would change and people would try new things. Still, J. Gasco felt no pressure because he had a new plan. And so on 5 December 1933 the J. Gasco tonic and soft drinks series was officially launched at 5:57 p.m. . The formulas of the existing products were improved, a complete packaging was devised and there was transport for customers. A product that we all know in the gin world today, but at that time it was a true luxury product that you could find in the best American clubs.
Conclusion: We're talking about a range of tonics and soft drinks with not only an interesting background story, but also an excellent quality! Within the J. Gasco series there are three different tonics to be found. Below you'll find some extra information and a few serves for each tonic that we highly recommend:
J. Gasco Indian Tonic
The J. Gasco Indian tonic is an ideal tonic to combine with standard gins. Although the J. Gasco range has a slightly dryer character, you also notice a soft and balanced taste. This tonic is not only ideal for serving in a gin tonic, but can also be used when making cocktails. We like to combine the J. Gasco Indian Tonic with the Italian Malfy Original Gin.
J. Gasco Dry Bitter Tonic
The second tonic in the series is the dry bitter tonic. When we talk about a tonic according to the old recipe, it immediately stands out. This tonic is more bitter in taste than the ordinary Indian tonic, but strengthens the flavours and botanicals of the gin when you serve it as a gin-tonic. For us the dry bitter tonic is ideal in combination with Roby Marton gin, KÃ priol Dry gin and the V2C Dutch Dry Gin.
J. Gasco 13.5 Tonic
The last tonic from the J. Gasco range is the slightly lesser-known 13.5 tonic. The name comes from the number of calories in this tonic, 13.5. This tonic can be compared to the light-tonics that other brands also put on the market, but with the character of the J. Gasco range. As a matter of fact, did you know that this tonic has the lowest calorie number in the entire range of tonics available worldwide? (ideal for those who want to enjoy a gin-tonic, but also want to track some calories). This tonic contains no sugar, but do contain fructose and juniper extract and is also drier in taste. Although this tonic is not everywhere, we are a big fan!
For example, the J. Gasco 13.5 can be combined with the heavenly Stockholms Bränneri gin from Sweden (review of this gin can be found on our Instagram page). The tonic ensures that the flavours of the gin come through instead of being overpowered, something that can happen with other sweet tonics. He also seems to be a nice combination with the London nr. 1, so we will test that out for you soon.

Vandaag brengen we jullie onze eerste tonic-special, namelijk een uitgebreide review over de J.Gasco tonics. Een Italiaanse range die al sinds de start van onze blog heel wat interesse opwekte bij ons. Het verhaal achter de tonics start bij Giuseppe Gasco, zoon van een gerenommeerd farmaceut Antonio Gasco. Al van kinds af aan hielp Giuseppe zijn vader met het bereiden van diverse brouwsels in zijn winkel. Het gezin maakte tijdens de eerste wereldoorlog moeilijke tijden door waardoor Giuseppe’s moeder, Maria, beslist om te emigreren. In 1920 verhuisd de familie Gasco naar Chicago, wat voor hen de start van een nieuw leven zou betekenen. Ze kregen onderdak bij de broer van Maria, die Giuseppe onder de vleugels nam en hem te werk stelde in zijn bedrijf.
Giuseppe kreeg van zijn nonkel de bijnaam ‘Joseph’ en al snel veranderde dit in J.Gasco. en kent als jonge twintiger heel wat succes. Hij was diegene die wist dat de verschillende bieren, whisky’s moonshines die in die tijd op de zwarte markt te vinden waren (sinds alcohol in die tijd illegaal gemaakt was) nood hadden aan een zekere ondersteuning, zodat het geliefd zou worden bij een ruimer publiek. Gebaseerd op de kennis die hij opdeed bij zijn vader besloot hij een reeks tonics en softdrinks te maken om het drinken van alcohol naar een ander niveau te tillen. De drank zou makkelijker te smaken zijn, het zorgt voor een leuk visueel aspect. Kortom, het zou voor meer consumpties zorgen.
Op 5 december 1933 zou er echter veel veranderen. Die dag zou alcohol terug legaal worden, wat betekende dat de consumptie zou veranderen en dat mensen nieuwe dingen zouden uitproberen. Toch voelde J.Gasco geen druk, omdat hij een nieuw plan had. En zo werd op 5 december 1933 om 17 uur 57 officieel de J.Gasco tonic en softdrinks reeks gelanceerd. De formules van de bestaande producten werden verbeterd, er werd een volledige verpakking uitgedacht en er kwam transport voor cliënteel. Een product dat we binnen de ginwereld allemaal kennen vandaag, maar dat in die tijd een waar luxeproduct was dat je in de beste Amerikaanse clubs terugvond.
Conclusie: We spreken hier over een reeks van tonics en softdrinks met niet enkel een interessant achtergrondverhaal, maar ook met een uitstekende kwaliteit! Binnen de J.Gasco reeks zijn er drie verschillende tonics terug te vinden. Hieronder vind je bij iedere tonic wat extra informatie en enkele serves die wij ten zeerste aanraden:
J. Gasco Indian Tonic
De J.Gasco Indian tonic is een ideale tonic om te combineren met standaard gins. Hoewel de J.Gasco reeks een ietwat droger karakter hebben, merk je ook een zachte en gebalanceerde smaak. Deze tonic is niet alleen ideaal om in een gin-tonic te serveren, maar kan ook gebruikt worden bij het maken van cocktails. Wij combineren de J.Gasco Indian Tonic graag met de Italiaanse Malfy Originale Gin.
J. Gasco Dry Bitter Tonic
De tweede tonic uit de reeks is de dry bitter tonic. Wanneer we spreken over een tonic volgens het oude recept, dan springt deze er meteen uit. Deze tonic is meer bitter in smaak dan de gewone Indian tonic, maar versterkt de smaken en de gebruikte botanicals van de gin wanneer je hem als gin-tonic gaat serveren. Voor ons is de dry bitter tonic ideaal in combinatie met onder meer Roby Marton gin, KÃ priol Dry gin en de V2C Dutch Dry Gin.
J. Gasco 13.5 Tonic
De laatste tonic uit het J.Gasco gamma is de iets minder bekende 13.5 tonic. De naam is afkomstig van het aantal calorieën in deze tonic, 13.5. Deze tonic valt te vergelijken met de light-tonics die andere merken ook op de markt brengen, maar dan met het karakter van de J.Gasco reeks. Wisten jullie trouwens dat deze tonic het laagste calorieaantal heeft uit het hele gamma van tonics dat wereldwijd te vinden is. (ideaal voor wie van een gin-tonic wil genieten, maar ook wat op de lijn wil letten). In deze tonic zit geen suiker, maar wel fructose en jeneverbesextract en is ook droger in smaak. Hoewel deze tonic niet overal te vinden is, zijn wij een grote fan!
De J.Gasco 13.5 kan je bijvoorbeeld gaan combineren met de hemelse Stockholms Bränneri gin uit Zweden (review van deze gin is te vinden op onze Instagram pagina). De tonic zorgt er voor dat de smaken van de gin zo min mogelijk verdoezeld raken, iets wat bij andere zoete tonics wel eens kan voorvallen. Hij schijnt ook een mooie combinatie te vormen met the London nr.1, dus die testen we snel eens uit voor jullie.
